Our Vision

Architectural Specifications are legal documents used for tendering, costing and construction. They communicate the owner’s design intent, performance criteria and regulatory design requirements following the industry’s standards and provincial legislative codes to the builder. Using Masterformat®, they form an integral part of the design as a required, uniform and complimentary document to the Drawings.

However, more times than not, specifications are often seen as a cumbersome document reflecting a negative connotation which are used to exert control on the trades and/or increase the construction cost for the owner.

At Cadence Specifications Inc., our mission is to provide a“written palette” for clear communication and collaboration between owners, developers, manufacturers, suppliers, associations, contractors, trades people, and educational institutions. In doing so, we believe we will succeed past these negative past perceptions because construction is a creative artistic process that involves many different disciplines, perspectives, and expectations. Specifications can in fact help owners, consultants, and contractors find agreement and move towards projects to be completed on time, on budget and as required by the authorities having jurisdiction.

Through the written word and bound by the ethics of being a member of Construction Specifications Canada(CSC), our goal is to provide clarity, complete confidentiality, and timely results in every document we create and publish for all the team players in this complex ever-changing industry.

Education

As the senior Principal of Cadence Specifications Inc., Glenn Chatten has become one of the primary instructors throughout Canada of the four main courses offered by the CSC. In doing so, he believes that there is a continuing connection between teaching and learning. Through instructive curriculums, on-going research, in-class group discussions(whether in person or online) and a relentless openness to listen to all sides of the queries associated with instructing these courses, Glenn remains assured that he learns as much as he teaches from these classes and courses.

Collaboration

Cadence Specifications Inc. is a team player within the design and construction of every facility and building that is constructed using their Project Manual. This includes collaborating with every consultant, builder, developer, contractor, supplier/manufacturer through informational meetings and on-going research to ensure the accuracy, clarity and continuity to the design intent and performance criteria of each assembly and system used.

Communication

The foundation of any successful goal or business is based in the ability to communicate as a team member. The sharing of ideas, thoughts, concerns, questions and directions is the basis of ensuring that any goal can be successfully reached. Within that base lies the important ingredients of trust, honesty and confidentiality.

These values are essential for every written word that is created and published by Cadence Specifications Inc. In doing so, we rely on the review and editing process by our clients, manufacturing representatives and the team of consultants and engineers that allows us to ensure that we provide the most accurate documents possible.

Insurance

Cadence Specifications Inc. has a $ 2,000,000.00 Insurance Policy that covers both Commercial General and Professional Liability (Errors and Omissions).

Glenn Chatten

With an honors degree in religious studies and psychology from the University of Waterloo and having studied for a M.Div. at McMaster University Seminary, at first glance, Glenn Chatten may not seem to be considered a likely candidate for work in the Construction or Architectural Design Industry. Add also the fact that he is a well known, award winning, singer/songwriter, CFMA nominated, professional finger-style guitarist and an accomplished touring recording artist, the chances of seeing him in at construction or design meetings would seem remote.

Yet, Glenn has carved out a niche for himself in the world of construction by his varied experiences ranging from being a steel worker at Inverleigh Bridge Construction in the mid-eighties; the CEO of an award winning Ontario contracting firm in the nineties; the Architectural Sales Representative for Western Canada for General Paint Inc; to a successful specification writer working in partnership with Specworks Inc. in Vancouver, BC.

The strong thread that has tied all these experiences together has been his continued intent and focus on, awareness of, and ability to utilize his finely tuned and engaging communications skills.

For the past 20 years as the Principal of Cadence Specifications Inc. (formerly Wordclear Specifications), Glenn works not only as an architectural consultant creating construction documentation and specifications for the construction industry but also offers education in the importance of specifications by providing presentations, lectures and workshops to firms, associations, college and universities; and teaching the following courses – PCD, CCA, TR, Specifier - offered by Construction Specifications Canada (CSC).

He brings with him an extensive knowledge of, and experience in - construction design, communication, building envelope sciences, specification writing, contract documentation and project management.

His seminars and lectures are both informative, educational and some would even say, entertaining.
